Is it legal to own a Japanese katana?

A traditional Japanese Katana is not illegal but must be registered for cultural matters in the municipal office. And that card must always remain with the sword. Furthermore, Japan is permitted to own swords from traditional Tamahagane steel and manufactured from authorized sworsmiths and Japanese antique swords. The Swords are not considered genuine swords with aluminum alloy blades and don’t have to be registered.
